Lights, Camera, Learn a Language

mangoLearn a language while enjoying a movie . . . .

The Belmont Public Library now offers twelve films in several languages*–specially customized to teach language, grammar, vocabulary, and more!

*French, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, or English as a second language for Spanish-speakers. . .

With Mango Premiere, you can select from various features to match your learning style. You can watch the movie straight through with complete subtitles in your native language, the language you are learning, or both. Or, you can choose “Engage Mode” to break the movie apart, watching and repeating individual scenes until you have mastered the dialogue. You can hover over words in the subtitles to see the phonetic spelling and hear how they are pronounced, or activate color coding that matches words in the subtitles with their English equivalents. You can also take quizzes and view cultural notes for an insider’s understanding of what words and phrases mean.

So break out the popcorn and get started! To find the Mango Premiere films, go to the Belmont Public Library website (www.belmont.lib.ma.us), click on “databases,” and select “language learning.” You will need to enter a Belmont library card number if you are outside the library. Select the language you are learning and look for Mango Premiere. Mango offers 62 courses in foreign languages from Armenian to Urdu and 17 ESL language courses, but only some teach with films.
